Streaming datasets in Power BI

The speed of creating an Analysis or an Overview of the KPI’s in a company is growing in significance. To make quality decisions, one needs quality data and foremost up to date data. If I don’t see data from “Right Now” or to put it differently if I don’t see data LIVE it’s very hard to steer the ship. This session is going to look at today’s methods of live data streaming and in doing that we’re going to look at the famous IoT world.

Designing your model for charts and dashboards

People don’t think enough about what data is good for what purposes, so they take their initial data, try to format it as a table and also make a chart from it. This often ends up with unsuitable tables and unsuitable charts. We’ll have better success if we follow the process of: Data –> Analysis (pivot tables, formulas, etc.) –> Staging Areas (rearranged and reformatted, but linked to predecessor data and calculations) –> Individual Dashboard Elements (charts, tables, etc.).

Jon will touch on these subjects:

  • Preserve incoming data
  • Use staging areas to plan and manage dashboards
  • Facilitate alternate views of your data
  • Streamline dashboard creation
  • Facilitate dashboard maintenance and updates

Reverse-Engineering an Excel dashboard

So what makes a good dashboard? And how do you make one in Excel?

In this session David Hoppe will take apart a world-class dashboard and lay out the bits and pieces that make it work its magic.

From general principles of information dashboard design to crafting custom charting types using native Excel charts – this session will teach you how to enrich sparklines with bandlines, stripplots and bulletgraphs to convey a wealth of information.

Get a sense of the formula-driven clockwork that makes a good dashboard tick – no VBA involved. Pick up formatting and modeling strategies to make Excel’s static grid-layout really come to life.
